Chief Takes on Critics
|St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon|
St. Petersburg's mayoral election is several months away. One candidate says, if elected, he'll replace Police Chief Chuck Harmon. Harmon defended his record to the Tiger Bay Club Thursday.
Chuck Harmon is entering his eighth year as St. Petersburg's Chief of Police. Critics say Harmon lacks the urban experience necessary to get a grip on crime in the state's fourth largest city. Harmon says his 27 years on the force gives him an advantage over an outsider.
Harmon says since he became chief in 2001, violent crime is down 25 percent. He expects to have more than full contingent of 540 sworn officers by the start of summer.
