Foreclosure Town Hall Meeting
Foreclosures have soared in Florida since the housing bubble burst several years ago. And so have scams. Unscruplous lenders have targeted people who are facing the loss of their home. Tomorrow's forum will feature Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum. He says the first thing people should watch out for is if anyone other than your mortgage holder wants you to pay money upfront - without a signed written contract.
"The very first thing you need to do, if you haven't done it, is talk to your mortgage loan company," he says, "whoever originated the mortgage - and see if you can't get them to reduce the loan payment - a lot of them are doing that right now - because they don't want you to be in foreclosure. They want the money - they're having trouble, too."
The forum will be held at 9 a.m. at Stetson University Law School, on Tampa Street, just north of downtown Tampa. After the presentations, volunteer lawyers will be on hand to answer questions.
