TAMPA (2009-08-20) -

Mike Roberts was patrolling in the Sulphur Springs neighborhood when he saw Humberto Delgado Junior pushing a shopping cart full of items. Police say Delgado began struggling with the officer and shot him in the shoulder, in an area not covered by his bulletproof vest. He was prounounced dead an hour later. Delgado was captured nearby, where he was found with three pistols and an automatic rifle.

Roberts is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son. Colleagues described him as a dedicated family man, known for his sense of humor and practical jokes. Officers wore black bands wrapped around their badges to honor his memory.

A wake will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 3207 W Bearss Ave.

St. Timothy Catholic Church will be the site of Cpl. Roberts' memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The church is at 17512 Lakeshore Drive, Lutz.
