Six years ago, Tom Pepin donated three million dollars to help build the free-standing Pepin Heart Hospital on the grounds of University Community Hospital. Now, the president of Tampa-based Pepin Distributing came bearing another gift.
"We are donating $2 million toward the continuation of what work has been done so diligently over these years," he said.
The money will be used to relocate the cardiac care unit, so the heart institute will have all its functions in one building. Brigitte Shaw is the hospital's CEO.
"I think it's one of the most important, because all the physicians and caregivers are constantly together," she said. "The teamwork is enhanced, patient anxiety is totally decreased."
The hospital also unveiled a new DaVinci robot device that surgeons will soon use to perform minimally-invasive heart procedures.
