Law officials say gangs are present in many of Hillsborough County schools in one form or another. That’s why the Leto High principal scheduled an “awareness” meeting to teach parents how to spot it if their child is in a gang. And, there also are other prevention initiatives.

The Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office knows of 59 active gangs in the county with more than 2400 gang members.

Hillsborough Sheriff David Gee heads up the regional gang reduction task force. The group of law officers, educators and diversion experts meets regularly.

“To discuss the gang presence in Florida, it’s not just Hillsborough County,” HSO Sgt. Laura Regan said. “And to make sure we stay on top of it. We’ve come up with these gang prevention initiatives.”

Those prevention initiatives include a new interactive web site hosted by former Buccaneer running back Warrick Dunn. The site TampaBayGangs.com has different sections for kids, parents and teachers.
