Q&A with Paula Dockery
|State Sen. Paula Dockery|
WUSF’s Steve Newborn talks with State Sen. Paula Dockery after she filed paperwork Tuesday in Tallahassee to enter the governor's race on the Republican side. Dockery says she never planned to run for statewide office, but was persuaded by supporters to enter the race. The 48-year-old Lakeland resident says she's planning a more formal announcement of her candidacy next Tuesday in Munn Park in downtown Lakeland.
Dockery is beginning an uphill battle against Attorney General Bill McCollum for the Republican nomination. She's not well known around the state, has never run for statewide office and is facing a veteran of three statewide races who has a $2 million head start in fundraising. The party had hoped to avoid a primary, going as far as pressuring Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson to stay out of the race. But Dockery says she faced no such pressure.
