Helping Homeless Veterans
|"John" Gets a Free Haircut on Veteran's Day|
John Carland retired from the Coast Guard with the rank of Captain, and about four months ago, he wasn't happy with the way many veterans in Pasco County were living. Many couldn't get a job and were reduced to panhandling or sleeping in the woods.
That's when he teamed with with a local pastor to create St. Jude's Homeless Resource Center for veterans. They each run it out of their garages. And on Veterans Day, they held a barbecue at a covered pavilion just off State Road 52 and stocked it with donated clothes and shoes, personal hygiene items and outreach booths for vets.
So at least for a day, homeless veterans were able to share a meal, get a haircut, and peruse through donated clothing and shoes.
