Advocates for Elderly Care Program Met State Lawmakers

TAMPA (2010-1-5) -

Several state lawmakers met Tuesday at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County to discuss funding for child welfare, juvenile and criminal justice, and elderly programs.

Advocate Patty Suarez wants to protect the Community Care for the Elderly Program, which provides various services for seniors.

“Sixty percent of spouses who are taking care of a disabled or sick spouse die before their non-care giving counterparts and die before the patient dies. It is so important to support these caregivers and to deliver these home services,” said Suarez.

Suarez says her goal is to keep funding for projects considered essential to the elderly. Those services include cutting lawns or providing free meals.

State lawmakers are facing huge deficits and are expected to have to make some tough decisions this year on cutting or reducing programs.

The legislature will meet in March.
