TAMPA (2010-2-22) -

Two people are dead and many are injured after a tour bus drove off U.S. 27 and flipped onto its top in Highlands County Monday afternoon.

The bus was full of Elderhostel participants who were staying at South Florida Community College, according to Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton.

They were on their way back to the college after seeing the murals in the Lake Placid area, she said.

“There were broken bones, lots of cuts and bleeding. I spoke with one lady who walked away fine, absolutely no cuts on her. But there must have been at least 25 backboards being transported,” Benton said.

The names of the dead have not yet been released.

Several people were flown to nearby hospitals, including the Level 1 trauma unit at Tampa General Hospital.
