Rick Scott, GOP Hold "Kumbaya" Rally

Candidate for Governor

TAMPA (2010-08-30) -

It came on the heels of one of the nastiest primary campaigns in Florida's recent history. A "Unity Rally" pulling together Republicans was held Monday in Tampa. But Republicans have a long way to go before they're all holding hands.

It was as close to a "Kumbaya" moment as Florida's Republicans will get. No singing around the campfire, but several "mea culpas" were heard - including those from the incoming Florida Senate chairman and speaker of the House - who both backed Bill McCollum. And Rick Scott says he expects McCollum to eventually back his campaign for governor.

Since Republicans have controlled the state's politics for more than a decade, Scott vowed to tie Democrat Alex Sink to the White House.

"In this race, there's going to be a clear choice - someone who supports the principles of the Obama administration - government takeover of health care, higher taxes, large deficits," he says, "or somebody who's a conservative outsider, who spent their entire career building jobs. Building jobs, building jobs, building jobs."

So are Florida Republicans going to set aside the vitriol and come together as a team? Former Governor Bob Martinez says it's been done before.

"I've seen worse attacks, but the volume was greater because there was more money involved," says Martinez. "Even if they have a divisive primary, they want to try to come together. Does it get everybody? I don't know, don't know that it will. Will it get the overwhelming majority - particularly the leadership? Yes, it will."

Martinez noted that no Republican has publicly defected from the party line since last week's primary.

Scott says he looks forward to debating Sink, although he didn't commit to all five proposed meetings. He also vowed to stop spending his personal fortune on the campaign. Scott spent $50 million of his family's money just on the primary.
