Drilling Moratorium Expected Off Florida Gulf Coast

TAMPA (2010-12-01) -

The White House is expected to announce a moratorium on any new oil drilling off Florida's Gulf Coast -- in part because of the BP oil spill.

No drilling would be permitted for next seven years.

An administration official told the Associated Press that prior to the oil spill, there were plans for drilling in the eastern Gulf.

Since the oil spill, he said, there is a need to intensify environmental standards.

Earlier this year, the Obama Administration supported lifting the long-time moratorium on drilling in parts of the Gulf off Florida's coast.
