Florida Activist Defends Giving Bright Futures Scholarships to Illegal Aliens

| A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the DREAM Act last year. |
StateImpact Florida's story Monday about illegal immigrants and their children losing Bright Futures college scholarships raised a lot of questions from readers.
StateImpact Florida interviewed Juan, a Florida college student and activist for federal and state laws that make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens and attend college. Juan, who declined to provide his last name, also has received the Bright Futures and plans to graduate this fall.
Juan is an immigrant from Venezuela whose family's failure to earn citizenship demonstrates the complexities of immigration law. Juan also argues that the public has paid for the K-12 education of immigrants so why stop at college and risk losing that investment?

When will the abuse stop! Juan already got a FREE education k-12 given to him by LEGAL immigrants and US citizens, even though his parents are illegally in this country. You (Juan) are now taking away from my kids, american citizens kids, the scholarships that they earned within the same education system your illegal parents abused. I am not against you getting a fully PRIVATE loan for you to pay your college years, but at some point, the line to limit the abuse has to be drawn, enough is enough. My kids deserve a future that I legally sweated to earn for them.
