Sun Shining on Florida Tourism

TAMPA (2011-8-16) -

Tourism across the state did very well in the last quarter.

David Downing with Visit St. Pete-Clearwater said May and June were record months for tourism in Pinellas County. And fears that visitors scared off last year by misconceptions of damage here from the BP blowout might go elsewhere this year were unfounded.

But Downing says they are watching events unfold in Central Europe, the U.K. and Canada, because a full 20 percent of the region's visitors are international.

Downing said, "currency fluctuations, any kind of debt crisis in the European theater is definitely going to be of concern to us moving forward."

Still, Visit St. Pete-Clearwater is reaching out to people who can drive to its beaches.
