Update: Life After Weight-Loss Surgery
|Jenny Ruano's battle with weight began when she was a toddler.|
|After her bariatric surgery, Jenny Ruano lost more than 100 pounds.|
At 5 feet 1 inch tall, Jenny Ruano once weighed 242 pounds. But that was before the Miami woman had surgery to remove three-quarters of her stomach.
It's called the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and the goal is to help patients feel full faster and lose weight. After her procedure, Ruano lost half her body weight!
WUSF first brought you Ruano's story last year in a segment for the program Smart Health, which airs on WUSF TV. Last weekend, that episode won a Suncoast regional Emmy award--which makes now a great time to check in on Ruano.
Today, the 33-year-old weighs 138 pounds. When she meets new people, they can't believe she was once morbidly obese.
To maintain her weight loss, Ruano eats small, frequent meals. Although she hasn't been hitting the gym regularly, she walks or jogs when she can.
Ruano said she's although she's happy with her new body, she's saving up for a tummy tuck and breast lift to make the transformation complete. To watch the video of Runo's dramatic weight loss, click here.
