Classroom Teacher
The talk of the first half of this year’s legislative session has been education, and especially a proposal that eliminates teacher tenure and ties teachers’ pay raises to student performance. Introduced by a north Florida Senator and supported by former Gov. Jeb Bush’s foundation, it’s being called the most significant education reform in a decade. But teachers -- and their unions -- are blasting the bill as union busting, and they say it will significantly damage the state’s public schools.

Sen. John Thrasher says teachers and their unions will have ample opportunity to get involved in the 3-year implementation period for the bill's requirements and can play a big part in developing the assessments used to measure teachers' effectiveness. (1:44)

Chuck Evans offers some suggestions for evaluating teachers, including evaluations by a small panel of teachers from the same subject area or a small group of administrators. He also suggests tests are sometimes good for measuring student learning, but so are tools like portfolios. (4:55)

Evans describes how he might set up a merit-pay system for teachers. He says he would give great weight to educational degrees and advanced studies in developing a pay scale. (2:02)

Marshall Ogletree talks about the differential pay plan the Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association has been working on with Superintendent Julie Janssen. (2:34)

Ogletree comments on lawmakers' efforts to freeze class-size limits at the school average. He says the class-size debate has always been about money for the legislature, not about student success. (2:29)
