A number of flights between Florida and select cities up north have been cancelled due to several feet of snow that has recently fallen, state officials have been keeping a closer eye on the travel expenses of politicians flying to and from state business, and the national unemployment rate has dropped slightly but the state wide average here in Florida is remaining steady and is expected to grow to 12% in the coming months.
USF St. Petersburg LEED Building / Sci-Fi Symposium
USF St. Petersburg is home to the University of South Florida’s first Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) certified structure with its new Science and Technology building. This week’s University Beat on WUSF-TV takes you inside the building and tells you how this environmentally friendly direction may be the future for USF. Also: Coming up February 17th, USF’s Humanities Institute is holding a symposium featuring a trio of award-winning science fiction writers who also happen to be working scientists. This week’s University Beat on WUSF 89.7 FM talks to keynote speaker, author Gregory Benford, a physics professor who’s helping put the “sci” in “sci-fi.”
Sarasota Opera announced a five opera season for their 51st season in 2010-11. The fall offering will be Rossini’s version of the Cinderella story: La Cenerentola, which opens October 29. Sarasota’s 2011 Winter Opera Festival returns February 4 with four works including two Sarasota Opera premieres.
