Miles for Moffitt

The fifth annual “Miles for Moffitt” is coming up May 15th at USF’s Tampa campus, with Moffitt Cancer Center research once again being the recipient of all proceeds raised by the event. This week’s University Beat on WUSF-TV/DT has a preview of “Miles for Moffitt,” which includes five different races and a ceremony to honor cancer survivors.

“Five years, five races, one cause” is the motto of this year’s “Miles for Moffitt,” and that cause is helping Moffitt Cancer Center researchers find a cure for cancer. This week’s University Beat on WUSF 89.7 FM has a preview.

Karen Dalton, President of Miles for Moffitt, talks about how the Moffitt researchers picked to receive the funds raised by the event benefit. Also, Moffitt Dr. Vani Nath Simmons, who received a $25,000 Milestone Award for Research from proceeds of the 2008 Miles for Moffitt, talks about her work.

Karen Dalton on this year’s new “Motorcycle Miles for Moffitt,” which was held on February 13th and raised over five thousand dollars.

Sirena Ionata, Retail Manager with Miles for Moffitt title sponsor Florida Bank, shares the story of her battle with ovarian cancer, which she’s been receiving treatment for at Moffitt since her September 2009 diagnosis.
