THe Mass in C Major, Opus 86 was composed in 1807 and though initially not well received by its commissioner, Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy II, the public and later critics widely proclaimed Beethoven's first of three choral masterpieces as being decidedly inspired and magnificently crafted, combining classical formal elements and romantic expressivity. The Piece follows the traditional liturgy, but the tone is decidedly romantic with progressive orchestration, bold harmonic and rhythmetic variations and incredible textural tone painting. This work is a true hidden gem for the audience and a departure from the traditional musical settings of the mass from composers such as Haydn and Mozart.
