Florida Matters: "The Health of Florida's Beaches" (June 30th, 2006)

FL_BeachesThe state's active storm cycle is proving to be a challenge for our famous, white sandy beaches, home to sea turtles, high rise condominiums and hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. About half of Florida's coastline is suffering from erosion. Should we spend millions of dollars to keep the sand where we want it if the next hurricane will just wash it away? Or do we allow nature to take its course? We'll discuss these questions and more with our guests: Listen now.

Our guests include:

  • Dr. Albert Hine, from the College of Marine Science at USF/St. Petersburg

  • Nicole Elko, from the Pinellas County Department of Environmental Management.

  • Nicole Elko, from the Pinellas County Department of Environmental Management.

  • Suzanne Cooper, of the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council.

  • Ann Paul, from the Audubon Society of Florida.

Join WUSF’s Robin Sussingham for Florida Matters Friday evening at 6:30 and Saturday at noon on WUSF 89.7, Your NPR Station.
