Florida Matters: “The Tampa Beltway Proposal: Pros and Cons” (August 11, 2006)

Does this look familiar?Traffic congestion and construction delays have become a way of life for Tampa Bay commuters. Transportation planners are promoting a new project for West-Central Florida: a proposed beltway which would begin in Manatee County, head through Eastern Hillsborough, bypassing Tampa then turn west into Pasco County. The beltway would be among the most ambitious and costly road construction projects ever attempted in the region. Some critics suggest we should devote more resources toward mass transit, light rail and other alternative modes of transportation instead. Can Tampa Bay pave its way out of gridlock? Listen now.

Our guests include:

  • Ralph Mervine, Executive Director of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority

  • Senator Jim Sebesta, Chairman of the State Senate Transportation Committee
  • Dr. Steven Polzin of the Center for Urban Transportation Research

Join WUSF's Carson Cooper for Florida Matters Friday evening at 6:30 pm, and Saturday at Noon, on WUSF 89.7, your NPR Station.
