This Week on Saturday Night Jazz: "Songs of Berlin, and Regina Carter"

Irving Berlin

Irving Berlin

The amazing Irving Berlin enriched the world of popular song and musical theater for 50 years, and jazz musicians have always found inspiration in his melodies. We’ll celebrate his birthday with a few Berlin favorites this Saturday night. And for Mother’s Day, join us for some of Regina Carter’s most recent disc – “I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey” – on which the jazz violinist did her mother’s favorite songs.

Bob Seymour's Saturday Night Jazz airs Saturday, May 10, at 10:00 PM, right after Piano Jazz.

Featured Piece: Buddy Defranco

Buddy Defranco

Buddy Defranco was featured on WUSF, 89.7’s Saturday Night Jazz on February 16, the eve of his 85th birthday. Defranco spoke with Bob Seymour about his childhood in Depression-era Philadelphia, and reminisced about Tommy Dorsey, Charlie Parker, and much more.  And the music ranged from Defranco’s feature on Dorsey’s hit “Opus One” in 1944 to the brand new cd, “Charley Cat II.”
