An artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, November 8 from 5-8PM, with a lecture by Kate Helms to begin at 6PM. Food, libations, and music will be provided, courtesy of the gallery.
Tidewater Elegy presents a surreal landscape of furniture encrusted by bizarre marine lifeforms after sea level rises to inundate an extravagant Victorian-inspired Florida parlor. Created by Kate Helms, the tableau is joined by the private lair of an individual obsessed with documenting the rising tides by correcting a vast array of yellowed bathymetric maps, whiting out the areas that will be under water in the future. The juxtaposition illuminates past, present, future—and imagined—effects of climate change on our environment. Helms is a fifth generation Floridian currently working as an artist and environmental professional on the west coast of Florida.
