Antonin Dvorak: String Quartet No. 12 in F “American”

Antonin Dvorak: String Quartet No. 12 in F “American”

Our Evening Masterwork tonight is Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 in F which was inspired by his time in America. At the time Dvorak composed this quartet, nicknamed the “American Quartet”, he was serving as the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, but he wrote the piece while in Spillville, Iowa. At the time Spillville was home to a vibrant Czech community, so Dvorak was able to speak his native language amongst the locals and feel at home, oddly enough. He began his “American Quartet” just three days after getting to Spillville, and finished it within a month.
