Antonin Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 in e Op. 95 “From the New World”

Antonin Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 in e Op. 95 “From the New World”

Our evening masterwork tonight is perhaps Dvorak’s most famous work, the Symphony No. 9 in e-minor, better known as the “New World Symphony.” When Dvorak was about 50 years old, he left Europe to assume the role of director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, and while in America, he actually spent a lot of time travelling, going as far west as Iowa. Also during his stay in America, Dvorak discovered African-American and Native-American melodies and music for the first time. These discoveries and experiences in the “New World” tinge the symphony, but there is also a certain quality of longing for home throughout.
