Franz Schubert: String Quintet in C Op. 163

Franz Schubert: String Quintet in C Op. 163

The String Quintet in C by Franz Schubert was composed in the final weeks of his life. It’s rather unique in that rather than writing for a string quartet with an extra viola, which was common in Mozart’s quintets, Schubert chose to go with an extra cello. He approached the work in a symphonic manner, such as writing fanfare rhythms commonly found in brass, thus revolutionizing the art of writing for strings. With this work, Schubert created sounds no one had ever heard performed by a string ensemble. [Photo:pixabay/en/users/Casegrfx-543943/]
