Georges Bizet: Symphony No. 1 in C
Georges Bizet composed his First Symphony at the age of seventeen, and although the work enjoys regular performances today, the composer didn't do much in his lifetime to promote the work. The composer wrote the piece off as a youthful indiscretion, and it wasn't premiered until it was rediscovered in the 1930s – 80 years after its completion. Much of the work was inspired by Bizet's teacher, Charles Gounod, and the orchestration we hear throughout the work hints at the colors Bizet uses in his later compositions. The Symphony No. 1 by Georges Bizet, our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
