Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade Op. 35
This Evening’s Masterwork is the story of The Thousand and One Nights, the collection of Middle Eastern and Indian tales, turned into music. Rimsky-Korsakov completed Scheherazade in 1888, a work that evokes the image of the young Scheherazade telling stories to her sultan husband to keep him from going through with his plan to kill her. Rimsky-Korsakov described his Scheherazade as “an orchestral suite… representing a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images.” Tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
