Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in a Op. 50
Tchaikovsky only has one chamber work featuring piano and strings: a Piano Trio, and initially, he had no interest in writing such a work. However, in March of 1881 Russian pianist Nikolai Rubinstein died. Rubinstein was perhaps Tchaikovsky’s most important professional and personal mentor, and Tchaikovsky set out to compose a new work written in memory of him, a work that featured piano in honor Rubinstein’s instrument. The Piano Trio was completed in February of 1882 and premiered one year after Rubinstein’s death, dedicated “To the Memory of a Great Artist.” We’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio tonight at 7, our Evening Masterwork, on Classical WSMR.
