Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Op. 97 “Rhenish”

Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Op. 97 “Rhenish”

1850 was the year Schumann moved to Dusseldorf, in the Rhine-region of Germany. He had just accepted his appointment as Dusseldorf’s Municipal Music Director – something the folks in Dusseldorf celebrated, and it was an initially optimistic time in the composer’s troubled life. The Rhenish Symphony, Schumann’s Third, was composed in the early years of his residency, in the latter months of 1850. Schumann originally called this music “a piece of life by the Rhine.” It’s only a landscape by suggestion, though – think of this more like Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, as an expression of feelings rather than a painting.
