Then & Now 1/29: Mozart's Idomeneo

Mozart

On this date in 1781, Mozart’s opera Idomeneo had its premiere in Munich, and to say it was a success would be an understatement for sure!  Europe's best orchestra, the Mannheim Court Orchestra, relocated to Munich and was booked to play the new opera. The lead role was being written for Anton Raff, a famous tenor of his day, in addition to a cast of  talented and good-looking young sopranos. Mozart promptly fell in love with one of them, a strikingly beautiful diva named Aloysia Weber, but he ended up marrying her sister Constanza instead.

There’s some Mozart coming up in our area soon, as the Sarasota Opera presents the Magic Flute February 16th – March 23rd at the Sarasota Opera House. The handsome Tamino and the bird catcher Papageno are on a mission to rescue the Queen of the Night’s daughter from a secretive group of priests. You’ll hear the stratospheric singing of the Queen to the lowest notes of the High Priest Sarastro. Tickets and information are online at www.sarasotaopera.org
