Then & Now 9/18: Discover the Flute!
On this date in 1954, Virgil Thomson’s Concerto for flute, strings and percussion, had its premiere in Venice.
You can hear a concert featuring the principal flutist from the Sarasota Orchestra when Betsy Traba plays Lukas Foss's Renaissance Concerto, a work the composer describes as "a handshake across the centuries." You’ll also hear Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 and Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances. This is the first concert in the new Discoveries Series from the Sarasota Orchestra which offers a refreshing classical music experience at the Sarasota Opera House. These fast paced, 75-minute programs feature a post- concert talk back with the conductors and soloists to finish off the evening.
