All Night Jazz: Dominic Walker - Gigi Gryce

All Night Jazz: Dominic Walker - Gigi Gryce

This week on All Night Jazz we’ll focus on saxophonist and composer Gigi Gryce. Born in Pensacola, Florida, in 1925, Gryce is best known as the composer of one of jazz music’s most endearing classics, “Social Call.” He was also a top-notch alto saxophonist who worked with some of the biggest names in jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, and many others.

Tonight the “Other Nine to Five,” Dominic Walker will take the short hop down to South Florida on our Jazz Trip@Ten with songs about Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Plus our week-long tribute to saxophonist and composer Gigi Gryce continues. Then later, on the Midnight Standard, we’ll hear another version of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps.” The adventure begins tonight at nine on WUSF 89.7.
