Catherine Russell at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Catherine Russell

Catherine Russell is known for her work with Steely Dan and David Bowie, but also as an interpreter of blues and early jazz. For this episode of Jazz Night in America, Catherine Russell assembles a vocal trio to perform unearthed arrangements of originally written by Sy Oliver. Russell speaks with host Christian McBride about the origin of Oliver’s charts, and memories of her mother, multi-instrumentalist Carline Ray, who collaborated with Sy Oliver over thirty years ago on the very music she features this hour.
