Since its debut performance in Carnegie Hall on May 26, 1990, the Magnificat of John Rutter has proven to be one of the most important choral works of the 20th century.

The Magnificat or Song of Mary has been set to music by innumerable composers often as short works for Anglican services of Choral Evensong, but also as more extended works of several movements including that of J. S. Bach.

Musica Sacra is pleased to begin its journey through the story of Christmas with John Rutter's masterpiece in its scoring for Soloists, Chorus, Orchestral ensemble and Organ.

The evening will also feature Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint Saëns.  This canta-like work was composed in the rough space of 14 days, with completion taking place less than 10 days before its premiere on Christmas 1858.  The location for the first performance was the beautiful Madeleine in Paris, where Saint Saëns was organist at the time.

The work is scored for five soloists (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone), SATB mixed chorus, organ, harp, and strings in the standard five sections. The women of the chorus divide into four parts in one movement.  The organ plays an important part in the orchestral scoring of the work.
