Local classical guitarist Benjamin Pila has been invited to play for Pope Francis during his visit to the 9/11 National Memorial & Museum in New York. Jazz Performance - Eldar Djangirov - September 16, 2015
The pianist Eldar Djangirov began turning the heads of jazz listeners at an early age. His family moved from Kyrgyzstan to Kansas City when he was 10 years old and two years later Eldar was the youngest guest ever on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz. Fast-forward about 15 years, and he continues to impress listeners around the world, and is visiting Florida for a performance at the Harrison School of the Arts in Lakeland. Eldar stopped by for conversation and a live performance on WUSF's All Night Jazz, with Bob Seymour.

The performances include: Jean Park, playing the first and third movements from Lowell Liebermann's Gargoyles, Op. 29; Sung-Soo Cho, playing Frederic Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 1; and Munkhshur (Shuree) Enkhbold, playing the fourth movement, "Young Juliet," from Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, Op. 75. Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield was named cultural ambassador of New Orleans, and the state of Louisiana, back in 2003, when he was just 25. He had already founded the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, the band that he's bringing to the Tampa Bay Area. Bob Seymour caught up with Irvin Mayfield on Saturday Night Jazz, in an hour of conversation and music from that Crescent City big band, as well as one of Mayfield’s other groups, Los Hombres Calientes.

Classical Performance - Strings & Hammers - February 17, 2015
Strings and Hammers is in residence at USF and they stop by Classical WSMR to play for you live! Strings & Hammers is a twist of the traditional piano trio with violin and cello. Founded by Eunmi Ko, Sini Virtanen, and Julia Keller, the ensemble has the unusual instrumentation of piano, violin, and double bass. The members met each other at the Eastman School of Music while they were graduate students there. They shared the common interest in chamber music and new music, and naturally, they started playing together in 2013. The ensemble explores chamber music repertoire of the twentieth and twenty-first century and commissions works from emerging composers.
