Sarasota Concert Band's Holiday Concert Celebration
Sarasota Concert Band is kicking off the 2018 holiday season with a Holiday Celebration Concert. The concert will feature holiday favorites including “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson and “Hallelujah” from Handel’s “Messiah” as well as a handful of favorites that will encourage the audience to sing along.
The concert will also feature alto saxophone soloist Patrick Meighan, retired Florida State University professor and local favorite performing “Glazunov Saxophone Concerto.” Mr. Meighan has performed recitals throughout the US and in many countries abroad. He specializes in both solo and chamber music performances, and he has long been accepted as one of the leading saxophone teachers.
In addition, the Holiday Celebration will include a performance by the Sarasota Saxophone Orchestra, a twelve piece group consisting of the five most common saxophone varieties, who come together to create a dazzling orchestral sound. And in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, the Holiday Celebration Concert will also feature selections from West Side Story.
According to Conductor and Music Director William Barbanera, “Most people have not heard the gorgeous sound of the saxophone in its original intended context. When Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in the 1840’s, he envisioned a rich warm tone to play serious solos and perform in classical ensembles. This concert features both. Mr. Meighan will dazzle the audience with his virtuosity, and present a tone you won’t forget. The SSO will show, from soprano to bass, the range and depth of Saxophone ensemble playing.”
Tickets are $10.00 at the door.
