UnitedHealthcare Girls on the Run 5K
On Sat., Dec. 8, 2018, more than 750 girls from 48 elementary schools spanning from Sarasota to Tampa, Fla. will “graduate” from their after-school 5K training and life skills program as they line up to run and finish the UnitedHealthcare Presents Girls on the Run 5K. Registration is open to the public, with the race expected to attract more than 1,300 total participants.
The annual end of year race is part of the Girls on the Run Greater Tampa Bay 5K Race Series, with events in May and December of each year, both of which serve as primary fundraising tools for the non-profit organization.
Course and venue
The UnitedHealthcare Girls on the Run 5K Series takes place at Poynter Park in downtown St. Pete. Participants will be treated to a scenic, waterfront out and back course.
This transformational program has provided thousands of Gulf Coast region elementary school girls with the opportunity to improve their self-esteem, confidence and gain valuable social and life skills. Roughly half of participants come from lower income and/or challenging home environments and through this after-school initiative, are provided with the opportunity to participate in a safe and interactive program that has proven to change girls’ lives for the better. Scholarships from UnitedHealthcare and other local supporters help many lower income schools and individual girls participate with the goal of inspiring girls to take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms.
